Wednesday, Day 5 Mesa Verde

Wednesday was a bit cloudy with some rain. We decided we should go to Mesa Verde this day because it looked like it was clearing towards the west (where Mesa Verde was), and the rain would stop. Tom didn’t believe our prediction, but ventured out with us, after cooking us a fantastic breakfast. When we got there, it was barely sprinkling. We drove above the clouds to get up to the park. It was really neat to look down and see clouds below us. Ryan said he had always wanted to taste a cloud, and he believes they taste like raisins and M&M’s. He never really got the chance to taste them this day. In the park, we saw absolutely beautiful scenery, mountains, and various Indian dwellings. We got to walk around one of the dwellings and go down a ladder into a ceremonial chamber. It was quite small, but so great to know it has been here so long and was used by many before us. There were more cliff dwellings than I imagined.  I can't imagine building them up in the cliffs, heck, I couldn't even figure out how they got up into the cliffs!

Jake: “I thought it was really cool, because we saw a lot of things we learned about in social studies, like the ruins, the pros and cons of living there. It was all just really cool”.

Ryan: “I like that we got to climb down the ladder, and we got to practice grinding the corn, and I got to pull out a piece of a Yucca plant, and TJ told me how they used this as a needle and thread.” (Ryan went a little later to a lake to test out the Yucca plant as a spear to catch fish. He was unsuccessful)
Amaya: “It was really cool. I liked how you could see so many things, all over one mountain, like how they get up into their cliff dwellings, and how they built those.”
